About
Superfan is the songwriting project of Kali Priya Flanagan, a Brooklyn based multi instrumentalist and producer signed to the London label AD 93. What started as a solo venture has grown into something richer, largely thanks to a creative partnership with cellist Omeed Almassi whose string arrangements have become central to Superfan's lush, atmospheric pop sound. Kali calls this approach "Acousticello", and it goes hand in hand with a shift in lyrical style, moving away from direct storytelling toward fragmented, impressionistic poetry. Heartbreak gets channelled through layered imagery rather than plain confession. The reference points Kali name checks tell you a lot: Ryuichi Sakamoto's 1996, Cat Power's The Greatest, Low's Trust, Sigur Rós's Hvarf/Heim, and the vocal work of Elizabeth Fraser, Beth Gibbons and Harriet Wheeler. That dark voice and distinctive guitar tone have led to collaborations with artists including Operelly, Jordan Patterson and Quiet Light, and to a support slot for The Strokes at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, on personal invitation from Julian Casablancas.
