Takuya Kuroda is a Japanese jazz trumpeter whose sound sits comfortably at the intersection of jazz and funk, with a warmth and groove that sets him apart from the straighter end of the trumpet world. Born in Ashiya, Japan, he eventually landed in Brooklyn, where his career really found its footing. His close friendship with vocalist José James has been a defining thread in his work, with James producing Kuroda's 2014 Blue Note debut Rising Son, a record that put him on the map internationally. Since then he has kept a steady release pace, moving through Zigzagger on Concord and Fly Moon Die Soon on First Word, with Midnight Crisp following in 2022. His most recent album, Everyday, came out in 2025 on PPK Records, showing he has no intention of slowing down. Across all of it, the vibe stays soulful, rooted and genuinely listenable.
