Yazz Ahmed plays trumpet and flugelhorn like someone who refuses to stay in one tradition. The British Bahraini musician has built her sound around a genuinely unusual idea: fusing Arabic scales and Western jazz in ways that feel organic rather than gimmicky. To get closer to the microtonal nuances of Arabic music, she had a quarter tone flugelhorn specially made for her, an instrument that lets her access scales no standard horn can reach. Her 2017 album La Saboteuse was named Jazz Album of the Year by The Wire and cracked Bandcamp's Top 100 Albums across all genres, which is no small thing for a jazz record. Her third album Polyhymnia, released in 2019, is a six movement suite dedicated to women she considers exceptional role models, among them Rosa Parks, Malala Yousafzai and Ruby Bridges. She has collaborated with a genuinely eclectic range of artists, from Radiohead and Lee Perry to Toshiko Akiyoshi and the London Jazz Orchestra. Her latest album A Paradise in the Hold arrived in 2025.
