Named after the infamous 1947 unsolved murder of Elizabeth Short, The Black Dahlia Murder built their reputation as one of the sharpest melodic death metal acts to come out of the United States. Formed in Waterford, Michigan in 2001, they signed to Metal Blade Records in 2003 and released their debut Unhallowed the same year. Eight of their nine studio albums charted on the Billboard 200, with 2011's Ritual peaking at No. 31, a remarkable position for extreme metal. The band lost founding vocalist Trevor Strnad in 2022, a genuinely seismic moment for the group. Guitarist Brian Eschbach stepped up to take over lead vocals, and the band pushed forward, releasing their tenth album Servitude in September 2024. The recent music video for "Aftermath" shows they are still very much in motion. Their sound mixes blast beats and tremolo picked guitar riffs with strong melodic sensibilities, sitting somewhere between accessible and brutal in a way that has always set them apart.
