Few bands can claim to have beaten the Sex Pistols and the Clash to the punch, but The Saints did exactly that. Their debut single "(I'm) Stranded", self released on their own Fatal Records in September 1976, made them the first punk band outside the US to put out a record. That buzzsaw guitar sound, courtesy of Ed Kuepper, and Chris Bailey's arrogant snarl were already fully formed, drawing from 1950s rock and roll and proto punk acts like the Stooges and MC5. UK music mag Sounds called the single "of this and every week", which landed them an EMI deal fast. "This Perfect Day" cracked the UK Top 40 in 1977, and their second album Eternally Yours pushed deeper into R&B territory, complete with a brass section. After founding member Kuepper departed following the third album, Bailey kept the Saints alive through decades of lineup changes, scoring an Australian Top 30 album with All Fools Day in 1986. The band was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001.
