Tigran Hamasyan plays jazz piano in a way that feels like its own language, one built on Armenian folk scales and modalities, American jazz traditions, and a genuine love of progressive rock. His improvisations are full of Middle Eastern and Southwest Asian embellishments, even when he's playing well known standards, which makes him one of the more distinctive voices working in contemporary jazz today. His solo album A Fable leans hardest into the Armenian folk side of things, while Red Hail, performed with his group Aratta Rebirth, pushes further into progressive rock territory. In 2022 he took a sharp turn with StandArt, his first album of American standards on Nonesuch Records. Recorded in Los Angeles with a stellar cast including Joshua Redman, Ambrose Akinmusire, and Mark Turner, the record works through songs from the 1920s to the 1950s by composers like Richard Rodgers and Charlie Parker. It's a surprising move for someone so rooted in Armenian tradition, but he makes it feel completely his own.
