About
Led by bassist Michael League, Snarky Puppy has spent two decades building one of the most fluid and sprawling collectives in modern jazz. What started as a 10 piece band League put together in Denton, Texas, after failing to place into university ensembles has grown into a rotating cast of roughly 40 musicians, mixing jazz, funk, soul, rock, and world music into something that defies easy labeling. League once described them as a pop band that improvises a lot, without vocals, which captures the spirit pretty well. The band has racked up five Grammy Awards, including Best Contemporary Instrumental Album for Sylva, Culcha Vulcha, Live at the Royal Albert Hall, and Empire Central. That last one was recorded live at the Deep Ellum Art Company in Dallas. Their work with vocalist Lalah Hathaway on a Brenda Russell cover also grabbed them a Grammy for Best R&B Performance. Beyond their own records, members of the group have played alongside Erykah Badu, Justin Timberlake, Snoop Dogg, and Roy Hargrove, among many others.
