About
Named after the Van Baerlestraat in Amsterdam, this piano trio came together in 2004 when pianist Hannes Minnaar, violinist Maria Milstein and cellist Gideon den Herder were all students at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. The three quickly developed into one of the leading piano trios around, earning praise from de Volkskrant for the rare homogeneity that runs through everything they do, from impulse to sound. Their repertoire sits comfortably alongside the big Romantic works, think Brahms and Schumann, but they also make room for more unpredictable voices like James MacMillan, whose short character pieces play with the borders of tonality and emotion. Het Concertgebouw feels like a natural home base for them, which says something about where they stand in the Dutch classical scene.
