About

Also known as: Vladimir Jurowski, Vladimir Mikhailovich Jurowski, Wladimir Jurowski

Few conductors balance the operatic and symphonic worlds as fluidly as Vladimir Jurowski. The Moscow born, Germany based maestro made his international mark in 1995 at the Wexford Festival conducting Rimsky Korsakov, then quickly moved through Covent Garden, Glyndebourne, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, where he served as Principal Conductor from 2007 to 2021. Along the way he picked up the Royal Philharmonic Society's Conductor of the Year award in 2007 and, on his final LPO concert, their Gold Medal. These days his focus sits firmly in Germany. He has been chief conductor of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra since 2017, with his contract now extended through 2029, and since the 2021 season he has held the prestigious role of Generalmusikdirektor at the Bavarian State Opera, a post that runs through to 2029. His approach to opera is famously thorough: he reads the source text before even opening a score, composes his own inner soundscape first, and believes the theatrical and musical sides of a production should be completely inseparable.
