Wilco built their reputation the hard way. When major label Reprise rejected their fourth album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in 2001, the Chicago band streamed it for free on their own website, then sold it to Nonesuch Records in 2002. Both labels happened to be Warner subsidiaries, which critics held up as a perfect illustration of how broken the music industry had become. The documentary I Am Trying to Break Your Heart captured the whole messy saga. The album went on to sell over 670,000 copies and remains their biggest release. Formed in 1994 from the ashes of alt country outfit Uncle Tupelo, Wilco started out with a country rock sound before gradually pushing into experimental indie rock territory. Their fifth album A Ghost Is Born won two Grammy Awards including Best Alternative Music Album. The current lineup, anchored by singer and guitarist Jeff Tweedy and bassist John Stirratt, has been stable since 2004 and now includes guitarist Nels Cline, drummer Glenn Kotche, and multi instrumentalists Pat Sansone and Mikael Jorgensen. Their thirteenth studio album, Cousin, landed in September 2023.
