About

Yawning Man were out in the California desert long before desert rock had a name. Formed in 1986 in La Quinta, Gary Arce, Mario Lalli, Larry Lalli, and Alfredo Hernández built their reputation playing marathon instrumental jams at so called generator parties, informal concerts held deep in the uninhabited Coachella Valley outskirts where someone would haul a generator out and plug everything in. Those sessions directly shaped a generation of musicians, including Josh Homme, John Garcia, and Brant Bjork, who later covered the Yawning Man track "Catamaran" when Hernández drummed for Kyuss on their final album. Despite that underground influence, the band released no official recordings until 2005, when the debut LP Rock Formations appeared on Spanish label Alone Records, blending acoustic space rock with surf and Middle Eastern guitar textures. Since then they have been remarkably prolific, putting out six studio albums including Nomadic Pursuits, Historical Graffiti, The Revolt Against Tired Noises, and the 2023 release Long Walk of the Navajo. Most of their catalogue stays fully instrumental, letting Arce's atmospheric guitar work carry the weight, though occasional vocal appearances and guest instruments like bandoneon and mellotron add unexpected colour.
