Few artists have reshaped R&B from the shadows the way The Weeknd has. Born Abel Tesfaye, the Scarborough raised Canadian built his reputation on a haunting blend of dark R&B, synth pop and pop that stretched from his self released 2011 mixtapes all the way to stadium filling albums. His single Blinding Lights became the best performing song in the history of the Billboard Hot 100, and the After Hours til Dawn Stadium Tour stands as the highest grossing tour by a male solo artist ever. His sixth studio album, Hurry Up Tomorrow, arrived in January 2025 as the closing chapter of a trilogy that also includes After Hours and Dawn FM. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and topped charts in 16 countries, with guests including Travis Scott, Lana Del Rey, Florence and the Machine, and Justice. Tesfaye has openly floated the idea of retiring the Weeknd name and continuing music as Abel Tesfaye, partly inspired by losing his voice on stage in 2022.
