Admiral Freebee is the project of Antwerp based Tom Van Laere, whose roots rock sound draws frequent comparisons to Neil Young. The name comes straight out of Jack Kerouac's On the Road, which tells you something about the restless spirit behind the music. Van Laere typically performs as a full band, though the lineup shifts constantly. His 2006 album Wild Dreams of New Beginnings, produced by Malcolm Burn, is a standout moment in his catalogue, featuring a duet with Emmylou Harris on the track Coming of the Knight. His biggest hit in Flanders came with Always on the Run from the 2010 album The Honey and the Knife. A recurring theme in his career is reinvention: a tennis elbow injury forced him to rethink his approach entirely before recording The Gardener, his seventh album, which eventually came out in 2021 after pandemic delays.
