Few Turkish musicians have had a career as turbulent and politically charged as Ahmet Kaya's. A Turkish Kurd folk artist, Kaya built a devoted following across Turkey over two decades, releasing around 20 albums and tackling themes of identity, conflict, and left wing politics with a directness that kept him in the crosshairs of the authorities. His 1994 album Şarkılarım Dağlara, probably his most celebrated work, confronted the brutal conflict between the PKK and the Turkish army head on. The moment that defined his legacy came at a televised awards ceremony in February 1999, where he had just been named Musician of the Year. He announced he wanted to record and perform in Kurdish, his native language, and the room turned on him instantly. Celebrities threw cutlery, crowds chanted nationalist songs, and Kaya eventually fled Turkey altogether. He was later convicted in absentia on charges of separatist propaganda, though key evidence against him was shown to have been fabricated. He died of a heart attack in Paris in 2000, aged 43, and is buried at Père Lachaise Cemetery.
