About
Ton Koopman built this group in two steps: the orchestra came first in 1979, and the choir joined it in 1992. Their debut as a full ensemble was a big swing, premiering two Biber works at the Festival of Early Music in Utrecht, a Requiem for 15 voices and a Vespers for 32. Since then they have played halls like the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Barbican Centre London, Lincoln Center in New York and the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre. The real monument is what they recorded. From 1994, Koopman led a ten year project to put the complete vocal works of Bach on disc, and the 200 plus cantatas filled 22 volumes, with a long line of star soloists rotating through. In 2005 they started on the complete works of Dieterich Buxtehude, finishing that mammoth job in 2014.
