About
Anna Webber is a Canadian saxophonist, flutist, and composer who has built one of the more intellectually adventurous bodies of work in contemporary avant garde jazz. Based in Brooklyn, she operates across multiple ensembles at once, moving between her Simple Trio with John Hollenbeck and Matt Mitchell, the Percussive Mechanics septet, and the Webber/Morris Big Band co led with Angela Morris. Her composing often runs on conceptual rails: Binary drew partly from the now defunct automated YouTube account Webdriver Torso, while Clockwise was shaped by John Cage's percussion works during a MacDowell residency. Both Are True, the big band debut released in 2020, landed on The New York Times list of the ten best jazz albums of the year. She holds a Guggenheim Award for music composition, a BMI Foundation Charlie Parker Jazz Composition Prize, and a Berlin Prize fellowship.
