About
Ronny Hovland, the Norwegian guitarist and vocalist who goes by Ares, built his reputation as the founder and driving force behind Aeternus, a dark metal and death metal band he started in 1993. He is the only original member still standing, having steered the band through six full length albums and tours alongside heavyweights like Emperor and Deicide. The debut Beyond the Wandering Moon dropped in 1997 on Hammerheart Records and set the tone for a career rooted in uncompromising extreme metal. Before that debut landed, Ares spent a couple of years as the bassist for black metal outfit Gorgoroth, contributing to their Under the Sign of Hell record. His reach across the Norwegian extreme metal scene goes further still: he has done live work for Immortal and Grimfist, guested with Dark Fortress, and turned up in a handful of other projects including Corona Borealis and Black Hole Generator. Few figures have threaded through that scene so consistently.
