About
Also known as: Sam Barker
Sam Barker, working simply as Barker, makes electronic music that keeps one foot on the dancefloor and the other somewhere much stranger. British born and based in Berlin, he started out hauling synths to nightclubs and improvising with other musicians, then moved into booking before co founding the Leisure System label. With Andi Baumecker he also runs the duo Barker & Baumecker, which wanders the left field edges of techno, dub techno and dubstep. His solo run began in 2018 with Debiasing on Ostgut Ton, a set of dance tracks with the kick drum deliberately left out. Utility followed, then Unfixed, which flipped the idea and dug into what a kick drum can do. Stochastic Drift, on Smalltown Supersound in 2025, picked up a Best New Album nod from Pitchfork. He also builds instruments, mixing code with analogue and acoustic hardware under the Voltek Labs banner, and has made a string installation with engineer Kay Sievers using eight mechanical instruments.
