About
Ryan Lee West, who records as Rival Consoles, has put out every album and EP on the same label, Erased Tapes, which says a lot about how settled his sound is. It's a blend of ambient, shoegaze, minimal techno and cinematic textures, often built from analogue synths, pedals and deliberately degraded processes. Pitchfork once put him in the same bracket as Jon Hopkins and Nils Frahm, and he has remixed both Frahm and Hopkins, plus Ólafur Arnalds, Noisia, Sasha and Depeche Mode. His work has travelled well beyond the club and headphone crowd. He scored the Black Mirror episode Striking Vipers, wrote music for Alexander Whitley's contemporary dance piece Overflow, and has had tracks turn up in TV adverts. Albums like Howl, Persona and Articulation built his reputation, and his ninth studio album, Landscape from Memory, arrived in July 2025.
