Few bands can claim their name comes from a tennis instruction book, but Bettie Serveert named themselves after a Dutch title by Wimbledon finalist Betty Stöve, and that kind of quietly eccentric charm runs right through their music. The Amsterdam indie rock quartet formed in 1986, fell apart after one gig, then regrouped in 1990 and released their debut Palomine in 1992. The Guardian later called it a high point for European guitar music, and it sold over 300,000 copies worldwide. Their sound sits in that sweet spot of jangly, melodic alternative rock, with Carol van Dijk's voice drawing particular praise for its clarity and those slightly unusual pronunciations that come from growing up bilingual. Over the years they have toured relentlessly across Europe, Canada and the United States, shared stages with Dinosaur Jr, Jeff Buckley and Buffalo Tom, and kept releasing records, from the critically welcomed Lamprey in 1995 through to Damaged Good in 2017. They even covered a Bright Eyes track that landed on The OC, which introduced them to a whole new audience. In 2025 they returned with a new single called Ta!, their first new music in several years.
