Buffalo Tom's name is half tribute, half accident: it blends Buffalo Springfield with the first name of drummer Tom Maginnis, and that mix of reverence and casualness pretty much sums up the band. The Boston trio, built around guitarist and vocalist Bill Janovitz and bassist Chris Colbourn, got a serious early boost from J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., who produced their first two albums and even played lead guitar on their debut. Hüsker Dü, the Replacements, and Moving Targets all left fingerprints on their sound too. Their commercial peak came in the mid 1990s, when 'Sodajerk' and 'Summer' cracked the Heatseekers chart, 'Sodajerk' landed on the My So Called Life soundtrack, and Big Red Letter Day reached number 17 in the UK. After a long quiet spell they came back with Three Easy Pieces in 2007, kept releasing records through Quiet and Peace in 2018, and dropped Jump Rope as recently as 2024, showing no real signs of slowing down.
