Kristin Hersh has spent decades refusing to play by the music industry's rules. Founding member of Throwing Muses, the first American band signed to the British label 4AD, she helped carve out a sound the label described as joining elliptical post punk, folk jangle and rockabilly without settling into standard genre patterns. Her solo work peels that back to something rawer and more personal, built around her voice, guitar, and a stream of consciousness lyrical style that turns ugly feelings into art. Michael Stipe of R.E.M. showed up on her debut solo album Hips and Makers, and her single "Your Ghost" with Stipe was the only one of her songs to crack the Top 40. Hersh has never been content with conventional distribution either. She co founded the ThrowingMusic label and later launched CASH Music, a direct to consumer subscription platform, giving fans access to albums, essays and live show perks. Alongside her solo output she keeps Throwing Muses and the power trio 50FootWave in rotation. Her catalogue now stretches across eleven solo albums, from the sparse acoustic sketches of The Grotto to the book and download package Crooked, with Clear Pond Road arriving as recently as 2023.
