About
Also known as: Laura Pauline Veirs, Laura Viers
Laura Veirs has built a quietly distinctive career in American indie folk and alternative country, releasing a string of records that sit comfortably between literary depth and warm acoustic intimacy. Her lyrics often draw from books rather than pure autobiography, with songs on albums like Saltbreakers nodding to A.S. Byatt and José Saramago, while her 2018 concept album The Lookout pulled in T.S. Eliot and featured contributions from Sufjan Stevens and Jim James. That collaborative spirit runs deep: she was lead songwriter on the celebrated case/lang/veirs project alongside Neko Case and k.d. lang, which landed a Metacritic score of 82. Veirs runs her own label, Raven Marching Band Records, and has pushed her creative range well beyond records. She scored a feature film, wrote a picture book about folk musician Elizabeth Cotten, and launched a podcast interviewing musician parents. Her 2023 album Phone Orphans, recorded entirely on an iPhone, shows she stays restless. In 2024 she was inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame.
