About

Also known as: Elizabeth Caroline Orton

Beth Orton basically invented a lane of her own: folktronica, where acoustic songwriting rubs up against electronic beats. She first turned heads in the mid 1990s by working with William Orbit, Andrew Weatherall, Red Snapper and the Chemical Brothers, lending vocals to their track "Alive Alone" and later "Where Do I Begin". Her debut Trailer Park (1996) earned two BRIT nominations and a Mercury Music Prize nod, and Central Reservation (1999) went on to win a BRIT Award. She leans more acoustic on some records and more electronic on others. Sugaring Season (2012) went for a purer acoustic sound, while Kidsticks (2016) swung back to electronics. Her songs have turned up in Vanilla Sky, Dawson's Creek, Grey's Anatomy and plenty more, which gave her a big American audience. In 2018 she and the Chemical Brothers finally released their long lost cover of Tim Buckley's "I Never Asked to Be Your Mountain", and a visualiser for "The Ground Above" has landed recently.
