Joan Wasser makes music under the name Joan As Police Woman, a nod to the 1970s TV series featuring Angie Dickinson, whose combination of power and sex appeal Wasser found genuinely inspiring. She wanted the name to be a little funny too, because, as she put it, even though her music is serious, she likes to laugh at tragedy. Before going solo she built serious chops playing violin with the Dambuilders, then later with Antony and the Johnsons, contributing to their Mercury Prize winning album I Am a Bird Now. As Joan As Police Woman, her sound draws from soul and blues, think old Al Green records in her own words, with guitar and voice at the centre. Her debut EP came out in 2004 on her own terms, without a label deal, and her first full length Real Life followed in 2006. Since then she has put out five studio albums plus two records of cover songs, and she has kept busy as a collaborator, writer, and arranger for other artists throughout.
