Cat Power, the stage name of Chan Marshall, has built one of the more restless and shape shifting careers in indie music. Starting out in the early 1990s Atlanta scene, she recorded her first two albums, Dear Sir and Myra Lee, with Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley and guitarist Tim Foljahn, cutting all twenty songs in a single day. After signing to Matador Records, she released the widely praised Moon Pix in 1998 with members of Dirty Three, establishing a sound that mixed punk, folk and blues with something harder to pin down. From there she kept pivoting: the soul drenched The Greatest in 2006 was recorded with Memphis studio musicians, while 2012's self produced Sun debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200. Her 2018 album Wanderer brought in Lana Del Rey for the track Woman and featured a cover of Rihanna's Stay, showing she still has a knack for finding unexpected common ground between her own sound and the songs of others.
