Alela Diane writes the kind of folk that feels like it was made around a fire in the California hills, which is not far from the truth. Her breakout record, The Pirate's Gospel, was written during a trip to Europe, recorded in her father's studio, and first released in hand lettered paper and lace sleeves in 2004 before Holocene Music picked it up and brought it to wider attention in 2006. The record earned her glowing notices in The Times and NME, and she went on to open for acts like Iron and Wine, the Decemberists, and Fleet Foxes. Her catalog has kept shifting shape over the years. To Be Still came out on Rough Trade in 2009, followed by the band backed Alela Diane and Wild Divine in 2011, and the more intimate About Farewell in 2013. She also teamed up with guitarist Ryan Francesconi for the collaborative album Cold Moon in 2015, and her fifth solo record Cusp arrived in 2018. Plenty of listeners first found her through a different route: her song Take Us Back ended up on the credits of Telltale's The Walking Dead, and surfaced again in the game's final season.
