This Is the Kit is the project of Kate Stables, a British musician who fronts the band under that name. The group built a devoted following through heavy rotation on BBC Radio 6 Music, with supporters like Guy Garvey, Lauren Laverne, and Mary Anne Hobbs championing their sound long before the wider press caught on. Their third album, Bashed Out, made with Aaron Dessner of The National, is widely credited as their breakthrough, pulling in contributions from Bryce Dessner, Thomas Bartlett, and others from that circle. Six studio albums deep now, with Careful of Your Keepers arriving on Rough Trade in 2023, the band has proven itself one of the more quietly consistent acts in British indie folk. Live, they shift between duo and quintet configurations, with a core lineup that includes Rozi Plain on bass and Jamie Whitby Coles on drums. They have toured alongside The National, Sharon Van Etten, and Iron and Wine, which gives you a decent sense of the territory they occupy.
