Marika Hackman has a knack for making folk and indie folk music feel genuinely unsettling, weaving gory, bodily imagery into songs that are at the same time delicate and atmospheric. Her 2013 mini album That Iron Taste, produced by alt J's Charlie Andrew, put her on the map, and she went on to release her full debut We Slept at Last in 2015. The Guardian gave it four out of five stars, praising its "superbly understated" quality. She also lent her voice to alt J's "Warm Foothills" around that time, reaching a much wider audience. She has kept building from there, signing with Sub Pop and releasing I'm Not Your Man in 2017, Any Human Friend in 2019, and a covers record in 2020. Her most recent album, Big Sigh, came out in January 2024, and she called it the hardest record she has ever made. Fittingly, it draws on the chronic anxiety that has shaped much of her songwriting, making it one of her most personal records yet.
