Bill Callahan has one of the most distinctive voices in American indie folk, a deep baritone that he deploys with deliberate cool over songs built on simple, repeating chord structures. For years he recorded under the name Smog, releasing lo fi cassettes and then a run of albums on Drag City that grew progressively richer in sound while keeping his signature dispassionate delivery intact. His lyrics circle around relationships, nature, animals, and a dry dark irony that critics have often called intensely introverted. After dropping the Smog alias in 2007, his solo run has produced some of his most praised work, including Apocalypse, Dream River, and Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest, the last of which followed a break he took after becoming a father. He has kept busy since, putting out Gold Record in 2020, collaborating with Will Oldham on the covers project Blind Date Party, and releasing the solo album YTI⅃AƎЯ in 2022.
