About

Black Coffee, born Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo in South Africa, built his entire debut album using nothing but a computer mouse. No MIDI controllers, no fancy gear, just raw ideas translated through basic software. That record, released in 2005 under his own Soulistic Music label, sampled South African greats like Hugh Masekela and Thandiswa Mazwai and set him up as a serious force in the local scene. From there he kept pushing outward. His tribal, vocal heavy afro house sound took him from Johannesburg clubs to the Sonar Festival in Barcelona, Circoloco, Panorama Bar, and eventually a Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album. Along the way he launched a world tour, went platinum in South Africa with Pieces of Me, and built Soulistic Music into a label that broke artists like Culoe de Song. He studied jazz formally at what is now the Durban University of Technology, and that grounding in structure and soul has always shown through in the way he layers a track.
