Out of the CBGB scene in mid 1970s New York, Blondie built a reputation for mashing up styles that had no business being in the same room together: punk energy, disco grooves, reggae, funk, and some of the earliest hip hop to ever land on a mainstream record. Fronted by Debbie Harry and anchored by guitarist Chris Stein, the band went from underground cult act to chart dominance fast, racking up four US number ones with "Heart of Glass", "Call Me", "The Tide Is High", and "Rapture". That last one is widely credited as the first rap track to top the Billboard Hot 100. After splitting in 1982 and Harry stepping away from music to care for Stein through a serious illness, the band reformed in 1997 and came back swinging. "Maria" gave them a sixth UK number one in 1999, exactly twenty years after "Heart of Glass" first topped the same chart. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, and have sold over 40 million records worldwide. Their 2017 album Pollinator hit number four in the UK, proving they never really went away.
