About
Body Count started as a way for Ice T to channel his love of heavy metal alongside his Crenshaw High School friends, and the band quickly became something much harder to ignore than anyone expected. Their 1992 self titled debut mixed metal aggression with streetwise lyrics about racism and corrupt policing in Los Angeles, and the track "Cop Killer" ignited a national firestorm that pulled in everyone from Vice President Dan Quayle to President George H.W. Bush. Ice T eventually pulled the song himself, not because he backed down, but because he felt the controversy had swallowed the music whole. Fronted by Ice T on vocals with Ernie C handling the guitar work and compositions, Body Count have kept grinding across more than three decades. They picked up a Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2021 for "Bum Rush" off their album Carnivore, proving the band is far from a nostalgia act. Recent uploads including "Psychopath" and a cover of "Comfortably Numb" suggest they are still very much active and making noise.
