About
Bokassa's career took a hard turn in 2018 when Metallica's Lars Ulrich called them his favourite new band on his radio show. A few months later the Trondheim trio, who had only formed in 2013 in a converted war bunker, were invited to open for Metallica on the 2019 WorldWired stadium run across Europe. Frontman Jørn Kaarstad even hung up on the first call, convinced it was a scam. He later admitted Ulrich basically made their career. The band plays loud, hard hitting Norwegian rock, and their name comes from Central African dictator Jean Bédel Bokassa, picked to match lyrics about worldwide atrocities. Their 2017 debut Divide & Conquer got a thumbs up from Kristopher Schau as the best Norwegian record of the year. Crimson Riders followed in 2019, then Molotov Rocktail on Napalm Records in 2021 and All Out of Dreams on Indie Recordings in 2024. Ole Vistnes took over bass that same year, alongside Kaarstad and drummer Olav Dowkes.
