About
Bria Skonberg plays trumpet with the kind of deep respect for jazz tradition that comes through in everything she does. The Chilliwack born, New York based musician built her early reputation leading groups like Bria's Hot Five, a nod to Louis Armstrong's classic outfit, and The Big Bang Jazz Band, and she has since taken that energy to jazz festivals across North America, Europe, China and Japan. She also plays flugelhorn, has performed alongside heavyweights like Bucky Pizzarelli, Howard Alden and Wycliffe Gordon, and co founded the New York Hot Jazz Festival. In 2017 she took home the Juno Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year for Bria, a crowd funded record released on Sony Masterworks. She has also worked with the Louis Armstrong House Museum's education programs as a mentor and teaching artist, which says a lot about how seriously she takes passing the tradition forward. Her discography spans several labels and styles within jazz, from her 2009 debut Fresh through to later releases on Sony and Cellar Music Group.
