Charli XCX has built a career on constantly reinventing her sound, from co writing the Icona Pop smash 'I Love It' and delivering the anthemic 'Boom Clap' to pivoting hard into experimental, avantpop territory with her Vroom Vroom EP. Her 2024 album Brat became a genuine cultural moment, scoring a Metacritic rating of 95 and spawning a global aesthetic that even found its way into Kamala Harris's presidential campaign. Tracks like 'Von Dutch', '360', and 'Apple' took on a life of their own on TikTok, and the deluxe edition brought in collaborators including Ariana Grande, Lorde, and Troye Sivan. The album earned her eight Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. Recently she has pushed her sound somewhere unexpected. 'House', the lead single for her Wuthering Heights soundtrack album, pairs spoken word poetry from Velvet Underground co founder John Cale with gothic orchestration and industrial noise, drawing comparisons to Nine Inch Nails. It is about as far from Brat as you can get, and that seems entirely intentional.
