About

Also known as: Chief Adjuah, Christian Andre Scott, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Xian aTunde Adjuah

Few jazz trumpeters have pushed the boundaries of the genre as restlessly as Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, the New Orleans born musician who coined the term "Stretch Music" to describe his fusion of trap, West African percussion, and Afro Native American sounds from his home city. His Concord debut Rewind That pulled a Grammy nomination straight out of the gate in 2006, and he has kept racking them up since, with six total nominations across categories including Best Contemporary Instrumental Album and Best Jazz Solo Performance. His catalog reads like a deliberate campaign to expand what jazz can hold. The Centennial Trilogy, three albums released in 2017 to mark a century of jazz recordings, showed his ambition at full stretch. He also toured with the Radiohead and Flea supergroup Atoms for Peace, collaborated with Cuban musicians in Havana for the Ninety Miles project, and joined Robert Glasper's collective R+R=NOW. His 2020 album Axiom was captured live at the Blue Note Jazz Club in the final days before New York shut down, giving it a charged, almost documentary energy.
