Glasgow's CHVRCHES have been one of the most distinctive voices in synth pop since their debut track 'Lies' hit the internet in 2012 and shot straight to number one on The Hype Machine almost overnight. The trio of Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook, and Martin Doherty built their sound around shimmering synthesizers, sharp melodic hooks, and Mayberry's instantly recognisable vocals, blending indietronica and indie pop into something that feels both polished and genuinely affecting. They followed a rapid rise with four studio albums: The Bones of What You Believe in 2013, Every Open Eye in 2015, Love Is Dead in 2018, and Screen Violence in 2021. The band has always pushed back against the music industry's instinct to make Mayberry the sole face of the act, insisting on presenting all three members equally. Their name, styled CHVRCHΞS, swaps the 'u' for a 'v' partly as a nod to witch house acts like SALEM, and partly just to show up in search results ahead of actual churches.
