Cristina Branco approaches fado with a contemporary sensibility, setting her apart from more traditional interpreters of the genre. Her connection to the music runs deep: after being introduced to the recordings of Amália Rodrigues, she threw herself into studying the poetry that forms the backbone of fado lyrics, and has since performed alongside composer and guitarist Custódio Castelo. She had already explored jazz and other Portuguese styles before fado became her true focus. Branco built a particularly strong following in the Netherlands, where a 1997 live album recorded in Amsterdam gave her an early foothold. Her 2000 album Canta Slauerhoff, featuring translated poems by Dutch poet J. Slauerhoff, became a genuine breakthrough with Dutch audiences. Albums like Sensus and Ulisses added to her European reputation, and she even collaborated with Dutch band BLØF on the track Herinnering aan later. In 2011 she expanded her repertoire further by incorporating tango.
