About
Mariza's debut album Fado em Mim landed in 2001 and immediately rewrote the rules for what a fado release could achieve, selling over 140,000 copies when 4,000 would have been considered a win. Born in Mozambique and raised in Lisbon's Mouraria and Alfama quarters, she brought something fresh to Portugal's most iconic musical tradition without abandoning its emotional core. Her voice drew comparisons to fado legend Amália Rodrigues, and the international music world took notice fast, earning her BBC Radio 3's Best European Artist in World Music award in 2003. Since then she has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, the Hollywood Bowl and the Royal Albert Hall, among many others. For the Athens 2004 Olympics she recorded a duet of "A Thousand Years" with Sting. Her albums Terra and Concerto em Lisboa both picked up Latin Grammy nominations for Best Folk Album, and she has received awards from countries across Europe, Africa and beyond. In 2018 she opened the Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final in Lisbon alongside Ana Moura, singing "Barco Negro" to a global audience.
