About
Gisela João's self titled debut record from 2013 announced her as one of the most striking voices in contemporary Portuguese fado, and the momentum has never really let up. From Barcelos, she has a gift for holding classical fado tradition, the kind associated with Amália Rodrigues, in the same breath as a distinctly modern sensibility. That low, intriguing vocal timbre is a big part of what sets her apart. Her fourth album, Inquieta, is a concept record built around the Portuguese protest and freedom songs of José Zeca Afonso and other songwriters from that tradition, and it may be the record where her voice finally gets the space it deserves.
