Current Swell turned a five song EP, discovered online by high school students on northern Vancouver Island, into a sold out first show at a local coffee shop. They had expected a handful of people. The Victoria band has been built on that kind of internet word of mouth ever since, and their song Young and Able became a YouTube hit in 2009 that helped win them a big following in South America, especially Brazil, where they headlined in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Their sound mixes folk, rock, roots, blues, reggae and ska, and it has even been tagged as surf rock. They have shared bills with The Beach Boys, Xavier Rudd and Bedouin Soundclash, won the $100,500 Peak Performance Project in 2011, and played a Canada Day crowd of 45,000 in Victoria. Seven albums in, from So I Say to Buffalo, they have stayed true to their upbeat folk roots.
