Brighton's Dave Clarke has been one of techno's most distinctive voices since the early 1990s, building a reputation on a style that blends ferocious precision with deep funk. His early Red EPs and debut album Archive One turned heads for being genuinely crossover at a time when techno was still quite rigidly siloed, and John Peel was a fan, handing him the nickname The Baron of Techno after a session together. His DJ sets are the stuff of legend, built around relentless cutting and scratching with a dark, electro tinged energy that rarely disappoints. The Devil's Advocate pushed things further, mixing heavy techno with hip hop and featuring Chicks on Speed and DJ Rush. Clarke also has a long standing love of Detroit's minimal techno sound and old acid house, and that influence runs through everything he does. In 2008 he took it somewhere unexpected, performing new music inspired by his Archive One track Rhapsody in Red with the Holland Symfonia orchestra.
