Denis Kozhukhin is the kind of pianist whose competition record speaks for itself: third prize at the 2006 Leeds International Piano Competition, then the top prize at the 2010 Belgian Queen Elisabeth Competition for piano, one of the most prestigious contests in classical music. Born in what is now Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, he has built a serious discography since his 2013 debut album of Prokofiev's war sonatas, Nos. 6, 7 and 8, a demanding programme that set the tone for what followed. His recordings range from Brahms Ballades and Fantasies to Ravel and Gershwin piano concertos, with orchestras including the Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. He is also a laureate of the Svyatoslav Richter Memorial Festival in Paris, which says a lot about the company he keeps.
