About
Martin Helmchen is a Berlin based pianist who has built a serious international reputation in the concert hall. He stepped in at the last minute for Maria João Pires at Het Concertgebouw in 2015, and Dutch newspaper Trouw praised that debut as refreshing, noting his brilliantly clear musical argument. Since then he has performed across the world, including at the BBC Proms, and in 2020 he received a Gramophone Award for his recordings of Beethoven's piano concertos with the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin. Beethoven's Second Piano Concerto sits close in spirit to the radiant lightness of Mozart, yet Beethoven's fingerprints are everywhere: the dynamic contrasts, the tight unity between movements, and the structural surprises that keep you on your toes. Even the slow movement, lyrical and a touch ceremonial, never loses its playful character. The finale's main theme is a prime example of early Beethoven at his most irresistible, punchy and catchy in equal measure.
