Few bands can genuinely claim to have invented a genre, but Despised Icon are widely credited as pioneers of deathcore alongside Antagony and The Red Chord. The Montreal outfit built their reputation on a punishing combination of death metal brutality and metalcore structure, with drummer Alex Pelletier's relentless blasting technique and the dual vocal assault of Alex Erian and Steve Marois sitting at the core of their sound. Signing to Century Media in 2005 gave them the platform to tour with essentially a who's who of extreme metal, sharing stages with Cryptopsy, Napalm Death, Behemoth, Morbid Angel and plenty more. They put out four studio albums before calling it quits in April 2010, with Day of Mourning even cracking the Billboard 200 before the farewell shows wrapped up in their hometown of Montreal. The break did not stick, though. After reunion shows in 2014 and 2015, they made it official and reformed in April 2016, going on to add more records to a catalogue that now runs to seven full length albums.
