About
Few bands can claim to have helped shape an entire genre, but Destruction did exactly that. Formed in Weil am Rhein in 1982, they are counted among the Big Four of German thrash metal alongside Kreator, Sodom and Tankard, and their early records like Infernal Overkill and Eternal Devastation are still held up as genre classics. Frontman Schmier has always been vocal about keeping metal underground, and that attitude runs through everything the band does. Destruction spent most of the 1990s without a label, self producing their output before signing with Nuclear Blast in the early 2000s and hitting a productive streak that stretched across more than a dozen albums. They returned to their core thrash sound on 2019's Born to Perish, which landed well with fans and critics alike. The band has seen plenty of lineup shifts over the years, most recently losing founding guitarist Mike Sifringer in 2021, but the machine keeps rolling.
