Few British bands can claim to have helped build an entire metal scene from scratch, but Onslaught from Bristol are genuinely one of them. Drawing early fuel from hardcore punk acts like Discharge and the Exploited alongside the new wave of British heavy metal, they hammered those influences into a thrash metal sound that AllMusic once called "punishing". Alongside Sabbat, Xentrix, and Acid Reign, they are counted among the so called Big Four of British thrash. Their 1986 album The Force is still considered a classic, and they toured behind it with the likes of Motörhead, Kreator, and a then unknown Anthrax. Their third album, In Search of Sanity, shifted toward a more progressive and power metal direction, landed at number 30 on the UK Albums Chart, and featured a cover of AC/DC's "Let There Be Rock" that cracked the UK Singles Chart. After splitting in 1991 they reformed in 2005, and have since added more studio albums to a catalogue that now runs to eight records.
