About
Also known as: Metal Militia, Tormentor, Tyrant
Few thrash metal bands hit as hard or as early as Kreator. Formed in Essen in 1982 under a string of names including Metal Militia and Tormentor, they locked in their sound fast, recording their debut Endless Pain in just ten days. Their second album Pleasure to Kill, from 1986, is the one that cemented their reputation, widely regarded as a thrash classic and a foundational influence on death metal. Songs like "Flag of Hate" became concert staples, and the band quickly grew into one of Europe's most exciting metal acts, touring alongside Celtic Frost, Destruction, Voivod and Megadeth. Along with Sodom, Destruction and Tankard, Kreator are considered part of the Big Four of Teutonic thrash, the German scene's equivalent of metal royalty. Decades in, they kept pushing forward: Gods of Violence hit number one on the German charts in 2017, and Phantom Antichrist before it brought them genuine mainstream traction. With sixteen studio albums to their name and over two million records sold, Kreator remain one of the defining acts in the genre.
