Five Grammy wins, a celebrated run with Blue Note Records, and a role in a George Clooney film, Dianne Reeves has had a career that stretches well beyond the usual jazz circuit. Born in Detroit and shaped by years on the road with Harry Belafonte in the 1980s, she developed a style that music critic Scott Yanow called "a logical successor to Dinah Washington and Carmen McRae," with strong chops as both a lyric interpreter and a scat singer. Her 2005 appearance in Good Night, and Good Luck, where she performed 1950s standards on screen, brought her to a wider audience, and the soundtrack took home the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2006. Earlier collaborators include Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, and Tony Williams on her 1987 Blue Note debut, and she has kept busy across decades of recording, with Beautiful Life landing Best Album at the Jazz FM Awards in 2015. The NEA named her a Jazz Master in 2018.
